Beginner Crochet Pattern: The Lark Bonnet

Do we all love bobbles? YES! Do we all love a pixie bonnet? YES! The Lark Bonnet is perfect for your little one and it is so quick to make and also super duper easy. This adorable bonnet is stitched in one piece with a little shaping around the front and bottom. The straps are added at the end. This makes the perfect baby crochet gift or a cozy winter hat for your toddler or young child. The colour combinations are endless so go for it and get creative!

Materials:

*4.00mm(U.S G/6) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
*I used Willow & Lark HEATH Dk yarn in the colour Seaglass blue (009) and some cream coloured DK left in my yarn stash. Gauge

18 stitches/15rows= 10cmX10cm (4X4 inch) in hdc

Stitches & Abbreviations Used

bo- bobble stitch (see explanation in pattern notes)
ch- chain stitch
ch1/sk1- chain one and skip one stitch
Colour A- main colour
Colour B- contrasting colour
hdc- half double crochet
RS- right side
sc- single crochet
st or sts- stitch or stitches
sp- space
WS- wrong side

Special Stitch

Bobble Stitch:
*yarn over, insert hook into st, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through two loops, repeat from * four more times (There will be six loops on your hook), yarn over, pull through all 5 loops. Yarn over, pull through last two loops. See the video tutorial.

This is slightly different to the bobble stitches in previous patterns. I actually like it better but the difference is very small. What do you think? How do you like to make your bobbles 😉

The Pattern

Bonnet Body





When you begin, leave a long tail to sew up the back of the bonnet.





In colour A, ch5963677175
Continue using colour A until you are instructed to change.





Row 1 (WS) 





hdc in the 3rd ch from hook and in each ch to the end of the row, turn

Do not break yarn, turn the bonnet to the wrong side and sew the back of the bonnet together, see pic below.
Bottom Edging
Turn the bonnet so you are working along the bottom edge (see pic below)
Row 1 (First Decrease,RS)
ch2, *place one hdc in the bottom of the next 2 rows, hdc2tog, repeat from * around the bottom of the bonnet, hdc into the bottom of any left over rows (see pic below), turn

Row 4 (Second Decrease, WS)
ch2, *place one hdc in the first 4 sts, hdc2tog, repeat from * to the end of the row, hdc in any left over sts, turn

Join the yarn to the right side of the bonnet and repeat instructions for the left strap.





Tassels
-cut 6 pieces of yarn into 10in strips
-using your hook, pull the strips through the end of the strap
– tie a knot at the end of the strap 
– repeat for the other strap
-trim the ends
Finishing
-weave in all of your ends
