How to Crochet a Classic Vintage Dress Jacket for Your Little Girl

March 20, 2025

The Tallulah Jacket is a charming sister design to one of my most popular patterns, the Magdalena Jacket. This adorable piece features the textured lemon peel stitch, created using single and double crochet. Designed with a full skirt and generous chest room, it layers beautifully over other clothing as a true jacket.

The Tallulah Jacket is worked in one piece from the top down. Once the yoke and skirt are complete, the sleeves are stitched directly onto the jacket and finally the collar. With countless hours dedicated to perfecting this design, I’ve also created a comprehensive video tutorial covering every stage of the process.

This pattern is beginner-friendly, featuring step-by-step guidance with detailed photos and videos to support you along the way. I can’t wait for you to get started and experience the same joy this design has brought me!

What You’ll Love About This Pattern:

✔️ Beginner-Friendly with a Touch of Texture – Whether you’re new to garment-making or an experienced crocheter, the step-by-step instructions make the process enjoyable. The design uses only simple stitches to create a piece which looks much more complicated than it is!
✔️ Seven Sizes! – The pattern includes sizes 0-6 months up to 12 years so you can make one every year as your child grows!
✔️ Perfect for Any Season – Use lightweight cotton for a breezy summer jacket or warm wool blends for a cozy winter look.
✔️ Timeless Aesthetic – A design that pairs well with casual and dressy outfits alike.

Pattern Testing

Pattern testing is an exciting and essential part of the crochet design process. It allows crocheters to try out new patterns, provide valuable feedback, and help ensure the instructions are clear, accurate, and easy to follow. As a designer, I greatly appreciate the contributions of testers who help refine and perfect my creations. Materials, Sizes & Gauge

To ensure the best results for your Tallulah Jacket, here’s what you’ll need:

Materials:

*5.00mm(U.S H/8) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge.
*Aran (worsted weight) yarn. I used James C. Brett Rustic with Wool Aran (Colour 41) for the base of the jacket and Hayfield Bonus Aran with Wool (Colour Alpine) for the collar. See chart below for approximately how much yarn you will need. If you purchase from this link, I will earn a small commission and can continue creating my patterns.
*stitch markers
*3-5 buttons (0.75in/2cm)

Gauge:

Getting the right gauge is essential for a well-fitting jacket. Be sure to crochet a swatch before starting your project. The gauge for this pattern is:

14sts/ 12rows= 10cmX10cm (4X4 inch) in lemon peel stitch (alternating sc & dc)

Gauge Swatch:

ch 15
Row A: sc in the 2nd ch from hook, alternate dc & sc to the last ch, dc in the last ch [14sts]
Row B: ch1 (does not count as a st here and throughout), alternate sc & dc to the end of the row, turn Repeat row B until you have completed 12 rows.

*Hint* This is called the lemon peel stitch. You will always place your sc into the dc from the previous row and your dc into the sc from the previous row.
