Annabelle Pixie Bonnet Free Crochet Pattern

October 16, 2020

A Super Quick Make

I absolutely adore a beautiful bonnet. Even older girlies look so sweet in them. All summer I have been working with Dk weight yarn and felt it was time to make a few projects in Aran/Worsted. I am always delighted to find how quickly projects in thicker yarn work up when I have not used it in a while! This bonnet can be made in an evening watching your favorite Netflix show. I just finished Emily in Paris and it was so enjoyable!

The Details

The bonnet is worked flat in a rectangle and then the back is seamed together. Next a ribbed edging is stitched along the bottom of the bonnet and across the front. Finally we make two straps and attach a small pom-pom to the bottom. So easy!!! Perfect for a beginner to crochet.

All Sizes
Turn the bonnet inside out and sew up the back of the bonnet using a mattress stitch or your preferred method. Since Sizes 0-6months & 3-5 years end on the RS, you will need to cut a new piece of yarn to do this.
The bonnet may seem slightly small at the moment but when we add the front ribbing, it will add about an inch to the overall measurement.

Bottom Ribbing
Turn the bonnet to the right side and join yarn to the bottom left of the bonnet (as though you were wearing it)
Row 1
ch4, sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in the next 2 chs, sl st 2tog, sl st in the next st, turn

Row 2
do not ch, place one sc in the BLO of each sc going up the ribbing, turn

Row 3
ch1, sc in the BLO of each sc going down the ribbing, sl st 2tog, sl st in the next st, turn

Repeat Rows 2 & 3 until you reach the the end of the bottom of the bonnet ending on a row 2, do not break yarn.
(The video tutorial below shows you how to do sc ribbing, the only difference will be you will need to sl st 2tog every second slip stitch)

Single Crochet Ribbing

Front Ribbing
Turn the bonnet so you are working along the front (see above)
ch 7

Row 1
sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch down, sl st to the first st of the bonnet, sl st to the next st of the bonnet, turn

Row 2
do not ch, sc in the BLO of each sc going up, turn

Row 3
ch1, sc in the BLO of each sc going down, place a sl st in the next two sts on the bonnet, turn

Repeat rows 2 & 3 until you reach the end of the bonnet, make sure you end on a row 2. Do not break yarn.

Left Strap
ch3
Row 1
sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in the next ch, turn

Row 2
ch1, sc in the next two sts, turn

Repeat Row 2 until strap measures 25.5cm/10in[28cm/11in, 30.5cm/12in, 37cm.14.5in] or your desired length. Break yarn, continue to right strap.

Right Strap
Join the yarn to the right side of the bonnet and repeat instructions for the left strap.

Finishing
-weave in all ends
-sew the strap securely onto the edge of the bonnet
-make two pom poms, I used a 1in pom pom maker and
used the tail to sew onto the bottom of the strap
