The Backstage Granny Sweater: A Colorful Stash-Busting Crochet Project

October 17, 2024

When I set out to create something unique for Glastonbury Festival, I gave myself a fun challenge—make something fabulous using only the yarn in my stash. No new yarn purchases allowed! That’s how the Backstage Granny Sweater came to life. Believe it or not, it was my very first time using the granny stitch, and it couldn’t have turned out better!

The Inspiration Behind the Backstage Granny Sweater

This sweater was born from creativity and resourcefulness. I wanted something eye-catching, comfortable, and perfect for the Glastonbury festival vibe. The best part was making it from materials I already had on hand. The granny stitch is a timeless, classic crochet technique, and even though I was new to it, I found it to be fun and easy to work with. I finished the sweater on time and absolutely loved wearing it at the Festival!

Construction: One-Piece Wonder

The Backstage Granny Sweater is all about simplicity and customization. It’s crocheted in one piece, starting with the back panel from the top down. Then, I added the shoulder and V-neck sections directly to the back panel. Once the front and back panels were completed, I stitched the sleeves directly onto the body of the sweater.

I designed the sweater to be cropped with extra-long sleeves for a cozy, relaxed fit, but one of the great things about this pattern is how easy it is to adjust. Want a longer body or shorter sleeves? No problem—you can make it your own!

Customizing with Color

The beauty of the Backstage Granny Sweater lies in the endless ways you can customize it. The more colors you have in your stash, the more random and playful your color combinations can be. I changed colors every three rows, and the pattern reflects this, though you can switch it up however you like—more or fewer rows between color changes are completely up to you.

If you’re like me and have a rainbow of yarns at your disposal, this project is a perfect opportunity to put them to good use. Each color adds character and personality, and I’ve shared a video tutorial in the pattern with a simple hack to make your color changes seamless.

I’m so excited to share with you some amazing photos of the incredible work my pattern testers have done with the Backstage Granny Sweater. Yarn Details

For this project, most of the yarn I used was DK (Lightweight #3). You can mix and match yarn weights if you want to get creative, but keep in mind that different weights may affect the gauge slightly.

Here’s a list of the Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK colors I used in my sweater. While a few colors came from other brands in my stash, I’ve matched them as closely as possible to the Paintbox equivalents for anyone looking to recreate the look:

  • Vintage Heather
  • Peach Orange
  • Rosy Pink
  • Deep Sea Blue
  • Pistachio Green
  • Vanilla Cream
  • Blush Pink
  • Banana Cream
  • Seafoam Blue
  • Duck Egg Blue
  • Washed Teal
  • Champagne White

You can buy the yarn here to match the exact shades I used, or go wild and use what you already have in your stash. The more unique, the better!
