The Fleur Dress: A Whimsical Crochet Dress for Babies & Children

There is something so special about crocheting a dress for a little one. I have always loved designing pieces that feel timeless and beautiful enough for a special occasion, but are still comfortable enough to be worn for ordinary days of playing and exploring.
The Fleur Dress is exactly that kind of design.
With its little bobble flowers around the yoke, tiny ruffled sleeves and beautifully textured skirt, it has just enough detail to make it feel special without being overly fussy. It is also a surprisingly straightforward make, which makes it such an enjoyable project once you settle into the rhythm of the stitches.

A Little About the Fleur Dress
The detail that really makes this dress special is the row of bobble stitch flowers worked around the yoke. I love how such a simple little detail can completely change the feel of a design.
The flowers are worked directly into the yoke, so there is no need to crochet them separately or sew them on afterwards. You can also change the colour of the centre bobble to give each flower a contrasting centre.
I made my original Fleur Dress in a beautiful wine-coloured worsted yarn, with a little green yarn for the flower centres, but this is definitely one of those patterns where you can have fun with colour.
A soft cream dress with dusty pink flowers would be beautiful, or perhaps pale blue with white flowers. You could also choose brighter colours for a lovely spring or summer version. I always love seeing how a different yarn or colour combination can give the same pattern a completely different feel.

Simple Top-Down Construction
The Fleur Dress is worked from the top down, beginning with a raglan-style yoke using half double crochet and bobble stitches.
Once the yoke is complete, the sleeves are separated and the body of the dress continues down from there. I love this style of construction for children’s garments because you can really see the shape of the piece developing as you crochet, without having lots of separate pieces to join together at the end.
If you are fairly new to crocheting garments, the raglan construction may look a little unfamiliar at first, but stitch markers help you keep track of each section and the increases as you work.
That Beautiful Textured Skirt
After finishing the yoke, we move on to one of my favorite parts—the skirt.
After the yoke is complete, we move on to the skirt.
The skirt is worked using alternating single and double crochet stitches, creating the beautifully textured stitch pattern often known as lemon peel stitch. You simply work a single crochet into the double crochet from the previous row and a double crochet into the single crochet.
It is a wonderfully simple stitch pattern, but it creates such a lovely texture.
The first row of the skirt also adds fullness before you begin the repeating stitch pattern, giving the Fleur Dress its gently gathered shape.
The pattern includes suggested finished lengths for each size, but you can easily adjust the skirt and continue until it reaches the length that feels right for the child you are making it for.

Little Finishing Details
Once the body is complete, a simple two-row ruffle is added to each sleeve.
It is only a small detail, but I think it finishes the dress beautifully and works so nicely with the little bobble flowers around the yoke.
The collar and back opening are finished with simple stitch detailing, and there is just one button to sew on at the back before your Fleur Dress is complete.

Sizing the Fleur Dress
The Fleur Dress pattern includes seven sizes, so it’s one you can come back to as your little one grows:
- 0–6 months
- 6–12 months
- 1–2 years
- 3–4 years
- 5–6 years
- 7–9 years
- 10–12 years
The pattern is designed with approximately 0–3 inches of positive ease, and the instructions are color coordinated by size to make it easier to follow the numbers you need.
I always recommend checking your gauge before starting a garment. It may be tempting to skip that little step, but it can make such a difference when you’re crocheting something that needs to fit.
Make It Your Own

One of my favourite things about sharing a crochet pattern is seeing how differently everyone makes it their own.
You can keep the Fleur Dress all one colour and let the texture and bobble flowers do the talking, or use a contrasting shade for the flower centres. Richer colours make it feel beautifully cosy for autumn and winter, while soft pastels or brighter shades give it a completely different feel for spring and summer.
The simple silhouette gives you plenty of room to make it your own.
And if you love the little flower details, there is also a matching Fleur Bonnet which makes such a sweet little set.
