The Jessy Hoodie Crochet Pattern for Babies & Children

There are some crochet patterns that just feel made for autumn, and the Jessy Hoodie is definitely one of them.
This is a cosy, over-sized crochet jacket designed for babies and children, with a generous hood, textured edging and little patch pockets. It is designed to be worn over clothing, so it has that lovely relaxed fit that makes it perfect for cooler days.
The Jessy Hoodie is one of those practical handmade pieces that can be worn again and again through autumn and winter.
A Cozy Crochet Jacket for Little Ones

The Jessy Hoodie is worked from the top down using a raglan-style construction.
The yoke, body and sleeves are worked mainly in half double crochet, which keeps the main part of the jacket simple and gives it a soft, classic look.
Once the body is complete, the hood and sleeves are added, followed by the textured edging.
The edging uses a combination of half double crochet and v-puff stitches. This adds a little extra texture around the bottom of the jacket, sleeves, hood and front opening without making the whole pattern feel overly complicated.
The Little Details

One of my favourite things about the Jessy Hoodie is that it feels simple but still has lots of lovely little details. The over-sized fit makes it perfect for layering. The hood makes it extra cosy for autumn and winter. The v-puff edging adds beautiful texture. The little patch pockets finish the jacket and make it feel especially sweet on babies and children.
It is the kind of crochet jacket that works just as well for everyday adventures as it does for a special handmade gift.

Yarn & Materials
I originally made the Jessy Hoodie using Rico Essentials Soft Merino Aran.
Although this yarn is labeled as Aran, it works much more like a DK/lightweight 3 yarn.
If you are substituting the yarn, I would recommend using a DK/lightweight 3 yarn with a 5mm crochet hook, or an Aran/worsted weight yarn with a smaller hook if needed to obtain gauge.
You will need:
DK/lightweight 3 or suitable Aran weight yarn
5mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
Stitch markers
3–7 buttons depending on size
Tapestry needle for finishing
Gauge
16 stitches x 14 rows = 10cm x 10cm / 4 x 4in in half double crochet
13 stitches x 14 rows = 10cm x 10cm / 4 x 4in in the v-puff and half double crochet stitch pattern
