The Mama Beau Sweater Vest – Easy Crochet Pattern
There are some designs that quietly become favourites.
The Beau Vest for kids was one of those pieces. It is simple, textured, and so easy to wear — the kind of handmade layer you reach for again and again. After sharing the children’s version, I received so many messages asking for an adult version… and I knew I had to create one.
So here she is — the Mama Beau Vest 💛
A timeless, wearable layer
This vest keeps everything that made the original so special — the beautiful texture, the simplicity, and that timeless handmade feel — but reimagined for adults with a softer drape and a more flattering, wearable fit.
One of the biggest changes I made was switching from aran weight yarn to DK. As you can see in the finished fabric (shown throughout the pattern Mama Beau Vest- The Moule Hole), this creates a lighter, more fluid texture that sits beautifully on the body.
It’s incredibly comfortable to wear and layers effortlessly over blouses, dresses, or knitwear.
Fit and sizing
The Mama Beau Vest is designed with an intentionally oversized fit, using approximately 18–22 cm (7–9 inches) of positive ease.
For best results, I always recommend choosing your size based on your actual chest measurement. If you want a more fitted vest, size down.
For reference, I’m wearing size M and have a 95 cm / 36 in chest measurement.
Construction
The vest is worked in one piece, beginning with the back panel.
The shoulders are then formed, and the front panel is worked across the shoulders and neckline chain. Simple ribbing and finishing details are added at the end, creating a clean, polished finish (as outlined clearly in the pattern instructions Mama Beau Vest- The Moule Hole).
It’s a construction that feels simple and intuitive once you begin, but comes together in such a satisfying way.
The original Beau Vest
This design began with the children’s Beau Vest.
It shares the same simple construction and textured stitch pattern, but is worked in aran weight yarn for a slightly more structured finish.

Skill level
This pattern uses just a few simple stitches:
- half double crochet
- crossed half double crochet
- single crochet
It’s perfect for a confident beginner ready to try garment making, or for a more experienced crocheter looking for a calm, meditative project.
Yarn
The sample shown is made using Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK in Pistachio. (If you purchase from this link, I will receive a small commission at no cost to you).
A DK weight yarn with good drape is recommended for this design. Choosing a yarn with softness and movement will enhance the relaxed shape and overall feel of the vest.
You can substitute with any DK weight yarn that meets gauge.
